Why Moreno Valley Homeowners Choose Unilock Construction

We provide Unilock repair in Moreno Valley and install paver systems across the area as an independent contractor, not an authorized Unilock dealer. What separates our work is that we follow Unilock’s published base-prep and compaction requirements for our specific soil conditions here, which is where most paver jobs fail. If you need a Unilock driveway, patio, or U-Cara wall built right or repaired correctly, call Moreno Valley Builders at (877) 752-3154 for a free estimate. We’ve been setting Unilock pavers in this city long enough to know exactly how their systems respond to our inland heat, our clay, and our winter downpours.

Call (877) 752-3154

Moreno Valley sits on some of the most expansive clay soil in Riverside County. Unilock builds a quality product; the question is always whether the base underneath can handle what our ground does when it gets wet and dries out. We build for that specific condition, not for a generic spec sheet.

Why Trust Moreno Valley Builders for Your Unilock Construction?

Unilock pavers and U-Cara walls are dimensional, color-consistent, high-compressive-strength products. They reward a contractor who does the base right and punishes one who doesn’t. When we service a Unilock patio, driveway, or retaining wall in Moreno Valley, we’re not guessing at what’s under the surface. We know what a proper Unilock install looks like in this specific soil, and we know what a shortcut looks like when we pull up a row and see clay and sand where compacted Class II base should be.

Noel Trevino, owner and general contractor at Moreno Valley Builders, grew up in Sunnymead Ranch and has spent nearly three decades building and renovating homes across the Inland Empire. He studied framing, concrete, and mechanical systems at Riverside City College, which means when we open up a failed paver driveway in this city, we’re reading the whole picture, not just replacing the top layer. The base, the drainage, the slope, the edge restraints, the joint sand. If the details aren’t right on paper, they won’t be right in the wall.

We source genuine Unilock face units and matching edge restraints for repairs so your existing Brussels Block or Beacon Hill courses blend instead of clashing with off-brand substitutes. We carry the compaction equipment, geotextile, Class II base material, and polymeric sand suited to Moreno Valley conditions. And we’re fully licensed as a general contractor, which means we pull permits where required and manage the entire job from excavation through final compaction.

Common Unilock Construction Problems We Fix in Moreno Valley

  • Efflorescence bloom and color fade on Brussels Block and Beacon Hill. After two or three dry Moreno Valley summers with irrigation overspray hitting the joints, you’ll see a chalky white film rising through the surface and the rich color going flat. The efflorescence is soluble salts wicking up through the paver from moisture below; the fade is UV degradation of the surface layer. We clean the bloom with a proper paver-safe cleaner and can apply a breathable sealer once the salts are flushed, but we’re honest about what a sealer can and can’t do on older pavers.
  • Joint-sand washout and edge spalling. This shows up on Unilock driveways after someone pressure-washes at full blast or after one heavy Santa Ana-season storm. The polymer sand between pavers never gets topped off, water gets under the joints, and the edges of the pavers start flaking. We re-sand with the correct polymeric product, compact it properly, and tell you exactly how to maintain it so it doesn’t happen again.
  • Base settlement and step-down heaving over native clay. This is the big one in Moreno Valley. When Unilock patios are set directly over the local clay with no geotextile separator and maybe two inches of sand, the clay swells in winter and shrinks in summer. You get dips, ridges, and pavers that rock underfoot. This isn’t a paver problem; it’s a base problem, and patch repairs won’t hold while the ground underneath is still moving. Rebuild is almost always the right call, and we say so plainly.
  • Ponding against the house edge and loose U-Cara wall caps. When a U-Cara wall or a patio is built without a drainage outlet, water builds up behind the wall or along the foundation. That trapped water pushes caps loose over freeze-thaw cycles (rare here but we do get cold snaps) and more often through hydrostatic pressure during our monsoon-style winter rains. We install proper drainage behind the wall and grade the patio to move water away, then re-set the caps with the right adhesive.
  • Black algae streaks on shaded driveway sections. This is common in Moreno Valley east-facing and north-facing driveway runs. Algae grows in the moisture held by joint sand, especially under trees or where overspray keeps the surface damp. We treat it with a paver-safe biocide, then address the drainage or irrigation issue that’s feeding it. Sealing alone won’t kill it; the moisture source has to be fixed.

Unilock Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach

We use genuine Unilock face units for any repair where pavers need to be replaced. Off-brand or box-store pavers have different thickness, color, and dimensional tolerance, so a “close enough” match looks wrong the day it goes in and worse after one summer of UV fade. Unilock’s Brussels Block and Beacon Hill lines especially have distinct edge profiles and surface textures that don’t blend with substitutes. We also use Unilock-compatible edge restraints, never treated lumber or PVC scraps, because the edge is what keeps your border courses from drifting outward and opening up gaps.

Repair versus replace comes down to what’s underneath the surface. If the base is sound, typically 4 to 6 inches of compacted Class II with geotextile fabric, we repair the affected area, re-sand, and compact. If the base is settled, heaved, or was never built right in the first place, we recommend a full rebuild. Patch-on-patch fails again in this soil, and we’d rather tell you that before you spend money on a temporary fix. Call (877) 752-3154 to have us evaluate your specific situation.

Our Unilock Service Process – Step by Step

  1. 1
On-site evaluation. We walk the area, check for dips, edge movement, drainage patterns, and joint conditions. We’ll pull a paver or two if needed to see what’s under the surface. This tells us whether we’re repairing or rebuilding.
  2. 2
Excavation and base preparation. For new installs and rebuilds, we excavate to the correct depth, lay geotextile over the native clay, then compact Class II base in 4-to-6-inch lifts. No shortcuts on compaction, especially on Moreno Valley clay.
  3. 3
Bedding and laying. We set a screed bed of coarse sand, lay the Unilock pavers in the specified pattern, and install edge restraints before the perimeter is locked in. For U-Cara walls, we set the first course level and true, because every course after it depends on that.
  4. 4
Joint sand and compaction. We sweep polymeric sand into the joints, vibrate the surface with a plate compactor, and top off the sand. This locks the pavers together and keeps water from getting underneath.
  5. 5
Drainage check and finishing. We grade positive slope away from the house, confirm water moves where it should, and clean the surface. We walk the job with you before we call it done and tell you what to expect for curing and maintenance.

Unilock Products We Service & Install in Moreno Valley

We also provide Unilock service in Woodcrest and work with the Unilock lines most common in Moreno Valley hardscape projects. Brussels Block is the broad, tumbled, old-world profile you see on a lot of Sunnymead Ranch driveways. Beacon Hill is the cleaner, squared-edge paver with a flatter finish. Richcliff gives a more contemporary, linear look with tighter joints and a denser surface. And the U-Cara Wall System is the modular retaining and accent wall line that lets you run a stacked-stone look with much less labor than natural stone. We stock common color blends locally for repairs and can order any Unilock SKU for full installs, including matching edge restraints and paver sealers suited to our inland climate.

We Also Service These Brands

Moreno Valley Builders isn’t tied to one manufacturer. We’re a full-scope general contractor that also specifies and installs KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and Kohler plumbing fixtures. One contractor for the interior and the exterior means your paver patio isn’t an island, and no one blames another sub when something goes sideways.
